Backflow Inspection & CCC Survey — Iowa Compliance

A Cross-Connection Control (CCC) survey identifies every point in your plumbing system where contaminants could backflow into the public water supply. Iowa utilities including Iowa American Water use CCC surveys to determine which properties need backflow prevention assemblies installed — and whether existing assemblies are properly protecting the water supply.

What Is a Cross-Connection Control Survey?

A CCC survey is an inspection of your property's plumbing to find every point where non-potable water (irrigation, fire suppression, industrial fluids, etc.) could mix with the potable water supply if pressure dropped or reversed. Iowa utilities use these surveys to:

  • Determine what type of backflow prevention assembly is required (RPZ, DCVA, PVB)
  • Verify existing assemblies are properly installed and maintained
  • Establish an ongoing annual testing requirement
  • Bring non-compliant properties into compliance

Frequently Asked Questions

A CCC survey identifies cross-connection hazards and determines what backflow prevention is needed. A backflow test certifies that an existing assembly is functioning correctly. Many properties need both — the survey first, then annual testing of any assemblies found.
Iowa utilities — primarily Iowa American Water — require CCC surveys for commercial properties, industrial facilities, irrigation systems, and any property with a higher-than-average cross-connection risk.
